Capitol Punishment rolled 20 deep down to the City of Furniture. Despite battling Sonic indigestion and the horrendous traffic of I-95, the team was excited and ready to play. CP entered the tournament as the 3-seed in a pool with Ring Y and El Diablo at the top of the pool, and Queen City Thunder & 2os below. A humid, muggy day made us feel like we were back in the swamp of DC.
The first game against 2os (a team of Los remnants) came out with some trading of points and sloppy play by both teams in the wet conditions and patches of sand on the field. As we settled our tournament excitement, our offense became crisp and our defense took us on a run that took us to victory 15-6. The 2nd game of the day against another local team, Queen City Thunder, that went a similar way. We rode the strength of our swarming D and chilly O to get a 15-7 victory over QCT.
Our third game of the day was against a strong regional power, former nationals qualifier, and damn snappy dressers: El Diablo out of Charleston, SC. The game began with a trading of points as each team's O-lines were running and gunning. We had a lead going into the half, but El Diablo came out hard on D and got back the breaks they had given up earlier. We continued to trade points until the cap went on and we were up 11-10. Our defense decided to close the game out for us, final score: 13-10.
Final game was against one of the Ring teams. They came out physical, throwing 'bows into our players noses (Teddy Ballgame), and running hard. It was a disappointing end to the day, but it helped us prepare for day 2. Final score: 15-6, bad guys.
Sunday morning, pre-quarters, we played a Philly team called Gavel. Came out hard and fast, made it rain on them offensively, and brought the hammer down on them defensively. Final score: 15-6. In the quarterfinals we met one of the Cash Crop teams, a new team from the triangle area that went X/Y for the weekend. For the first quarter of the game, neither team could stop the other. Then our d-line managed to get us a few breaks, but their d-line got it right back and we went into half down 8-7. After a few more breaks by their d-line, we were in a hole, but after our O-line calmed down and get us the disc on defense, we were able to get the breaks back. The game was fast, physical, and neither team wanted to give an inch. It went down to the wire with Cash Crop winning 16-14.
As our first tournament since we've begun practicing, we were happy to see some of the high level competition at Furniture City. We are now looking forward to more competition at Chesapeake Open in a few weeks.
Capitol Punishment headed to our first tournament with 3/4 of our newly formed roster to Boston Invite as the 17 seed. In pool play, we went 3-1 winning games over two Canadian teams (Bloody Gary and Grand Trunk) and fellow DC team Swell, and losing a close game to Portland Not 2. Despite our one let down, we won the pool and used the momentum going into the 9th place bracket Sunday. After a great win over Bodhi, we crossed paths with Baltimore's Med Men and their large roster and playbook. A poor first half led to a deficit we would not overcome this day, and fell to the gentlemen from Maryland 15-11.
Although we were not happy to see our tournament end, it was a great start to a what will definitely be a fantastic season. We look forward to our first official team practice and taking our full roster to the next tournament.
We would like to announce an additional tryout day on June 6th.
It will be held at the Marine Corps Barracks from 8pm - 10pm. If you have never been to the location before let us know in advance so we can add you to the list.
